Intro
Whether you’re pushing for higher power or refining your build for the track, understanding when and how to upgrade your injectors is crucial for optimal performance and engine health.
Why Upgrade Injectors?
Injectors are pivotal in delivering the correct amount of fuel to your engine. As you increase the power output through various modifications, the factory injectors may not suffice, leading to potential performance bottlenecks and engine inefficiencies (limp/CEL).
Identifying the Need for Injector Upgrades
Aftermarket Modifications Requiring Upgrades: Installing aftermarket downpipes, large 3” intakes, and extensive bolt-ons (FBO) necessitates higher fuel demand. These modifications can significantly alter the air-fuel mixture, necessitating a recalibration (tuning) of the engine’s control unit (ECU).
Factory Injector Limitations: The stock 570cc injectors on the GT-R R35 are typically adequate up to about 530 wheel horsepower (whp) at 13-14 psi of boost (DBA models). Beyond this, they max out, risking lean conditions and potential engine damage.
Choosing the Right Injector Size
For Full Bolt-On (FBO) Builds:
If you’re enhancing your GT-R with full bolt-ons but not extensively altering the turbo setup, injectors around 1050cc to 1100cc are recommended. These provide ample fueling capacity for modifications without overwhelming the stock setup. For example, ASNU 1100cc injectors are known to operate efficiently around 60% capacity at wide open throttle for such setups.
For High-Power Builds and E85 Fuel:
Builds involving larger turbo upgrades or shifting to E85 fuel necessitate larger injectors due to increased fuel volume requirements. In such cases, at least 1700cc injectors are advisable to maintain safe and efficient engine performance.
For Race-Focused Setups:
If you’re configuring your GT-R for track days or drag racing with high-grade fuels like C16, injector requirements may vary. While I use 1100cc injectors for my race setup with C16, your needs may differ based on specific power outputs and tuning.
Tuning After Injector Upgrade
Upgrading injectors isn’t just a plug-and-play operation. Post-installation, ensure your GT-R is professionally tuned to adjust the ECU settings for the new injectors. This tuning ensures the engine optimally utilizes the increased fuel capacity, maintaining performance and engine health.
