Loss of gears: 1st & Reverse

The Cause
A few months after my break-in on the new build, I had a sudden loss of 1st & Reverse gear. The Trans CEL popped up, skips 1st from P and hooks onto 2nd with 0 throttle, and R flashes…again no throttle. On my COBB, CEL P2715 was showing, which is Pressure Control Solenoid D (stuck). A common issue with Solenoid failures on the GT-R, however upon inspection, all solenoids were fine.

First, noticed tiny metal chips in the Trans fluid. Also, the Shift Fork 1/R had tiny scrapes, which could have been the reason for throwing Solenoid codes by having the tiny chips making it’s way into Solenoid D and causing a clog. Had to replace the damaged fork, so I upgraded to the DMS Heavy Duty Billet 1/R fork.

As mentioned, when this happens, you lose hooking into gears as well as the throttle. Basically, you’re stuck and the car won’t move. However, there is a way to bypass that and get everything back to normal (Temporarily).

The GT-Rs’ TCM checkup runs whenever the gear is on “P”, so at start-ups or whenever you shift into “P” after driving. If you’re stuck out, and need to head back home/shop, here’s how to trick the TCM into not reading the codes.

1) Turn the ignition to “ON” (foot off brake)
2) Shift to “N”
3) Start the car, and drive safely. All gears should be hooking and functioning normally.
